Pickling & Passivation
Chemical surface treatments for stainless steel that eradicate free iron and restore the self-healing chromium-oxide passive film.
Process Overview
Both pickling and passivation are chemical treatments applied to the surface of stainless steel to remove contaminants, heat tint, and free iron, thereby assisting the formation of a continuous, protective chromium-oxide passive film.
Pickling and passivation are both chemical treatments; neither will remove grease or oil. If the fabrication is dirty, a detergent or alkaline cleaning process is performed prior to pickling or passivation. This chemical restoration guarantees that fabricated and welded stainless steel achieves its maximum corrosion-resistant potential.
Applications & Suitable Objects
- Welded stainless steel pipelines & process spools
- Chemical processing tanks & pressure vessels
- Food, dairy & beverage processing equipment
- Marine stainless steel railings & architectural fabrications
Finishing Characteristics & Benefits
Eradicates Weld Heat Tint & Free Iron
Removes microscopic contaminants that trigger premature pitting.
Restores Passive Chromium Film
Catalyzes rapid formation of the protective chromium-oxide layer.
Uniform Satin Cleanliness
Leaves a uniform, chemically clean, and passive stainless surface.
Essential Post-Weld Treatment
Restores the alloy's intrinsic corrosion resistance after fabrication.
